Creating inspiring journey at Recyle4Change—Meet Mikayla!

Kayla commenced her journey at Recycle4Change (R4C), Bell Park, in mid-October 2023, prior to its November opening.

Kayla says, working at the Bell Park depot has been life changing. “The work is different, and the team are open and relatable. It’s a place where I can truly be myself, and that’s something I didn’t realise I was missing until I got here. I can express how I feel without worrying about being judged, and it’s refreshing to feel understood.”

Over the past 11 months, Kayla has really found her footing and credits R4C for playing a part. She had been homeless for three years and was living in her car when she first started at Bell Park, unbeknownst to her teammates. Kayla says, “Being able to talk openly about my life has been amazing. I can finally live authentically!”

Now, at R4C, Kayla is excited to come to work, “The culture here encourages open communication and personal growth, which makes all the difference.” Kayla notes, “I’m finally in a place where I can thrive, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead. It’s amazing how a supportive team can change everything.” Kayla expresses she is grateful to be part of this new and growing business at this stage in her career. “I love working with the R4C team because we all share the same outlook and work ethic.”

Kayla also shares a little about her experience with a strict religious upbringing, saying, “I’ve had conflicting messages all my life. The fear of rejection has always been a struggle, and leaving the church made it even harder.” It’s hard to believe this bubbly person ever doubted herself. She admits that her fear of failure has also held her back from achieving personal goals. Having completed a Diploma of Interpreting (Auslan) in 2018, Kayla acknowledges her reservations about resitting her Auslan Skills Assessment, having fallen short of a pass. “I would love to complete my Diploma and qualify, but unfortunately, I must prioritise my finances now and hope I can tick this off in the near future.”

R4C General Manager, Stuart Borg notes, “Kayla lights up when talking to people and has been a welcoming face at our Bell Park depot, building relationships with customers comes easily to her. As a natural leader, Kayla has played a vital role in training our new team at our Point Cook depot and we see the potential for her to grow her skills within the business.”

Kayla says, “What gets me through the tough times is knowing I have good in my heart, and that guides me.”
